In our city full of courtyards, canals, dozens of terraces and of course the world famous cheese market you are guaranteed to be surprised.
We will explain why Alkmaar should not be missing on your bucket list this year.
Far beyond the national borders, Alkmaar is known as the Dutch Cheese City with the oldest cheese market in the Netherlands. Cheese carriers who transport stretchers with no less than 160 kilos of cheese, hand-clapping traders and farmers and cheese girls handing out pieces of cheese: on the Alkmaar cheese market you literally fall short of eyes. This year it promises to be an extra special cheese market season, because in addition to already known cheese girls, cheese boys will also be present for the first time. Take your chance and shoot the best pictures with the cheese girls and cheese boys!
From the end of March to the end of September you can enjoy this special spectacle on the “Waagplein” every Friday morning and in July and August also on Tuesday evenings.
Alkmaar is bustling all year round. You can visit an event almost each weekend. And many events are free too! Think of King's Day and the famous Alkmaar Kaeskoppenstad (1 & 2 June): a historic event that brings the city center back to 1573, during 'Alkmaar Ontzet'.
Or enjoy a unique collection of 200 historic barges during Victorie Sail Alkmaar (25 to 29 July). With some of the boats you even can have a look inside!
The European Championship Cycling comes to our city from August, 7 to 11. Juniors, talents and elite drivers then compete for the titles on the road and in the time trial.
At the beginning of October we will of course celebrate 'The Victory' in Alkmaar during the Victory Celebrations. On October 8 and the days before, we celebrate the victory over the Spaniards with all kinds of fun activities, from the big parade to a nostalgic funfair.
And we close the year (and start 2020) with the “Warm Winter months”. Even then it is remarkable in the city with all kinds of extra festivities that you really do not want to miss.
There is always enough to experience in Alkmaar, but 2019 has even more to offer. It is the year of the Golden Age. The Spaniards were the first to be defeated in our city. This was followed by a period of great prosperity and Alkmaar took on an important role as a center for trade and production of cheese and butter.
You can find this history in buildings in our region. Think of the famous Alkmaar Waagtoren, the town hall in de Rijp and the Museum mill. These pearls always do well on beautiful pictures. Other recommendations: take a Golden Age city walk, visit the "The Golden Age" museum room in Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar or take the bicycle and explore the Leeghwater route through the wonderfully green countryside.
Travel website Zoover has chosen Alkmaar for the best shopping city in the Netherlands. We understand why! There are still opening even more trendy shops. Think of new stores such as TRUE, What is Hip and URBANISTA.
And to be honest: snooping around in real stores is much more fun than shopping online!
In the past year too, many new restaurants have opened their doors in Alkmaar. We can already tell you: you want to try it all out!
For example, eat a tasty bite at the brand new PLUIM on the Ritsevoort. Or enjoy a breakfast, lunch or dinner at FNIDSEN at the cozy Fnidsen. You can even sleep there! At TIL38 you share all kinds of dishes on the cozy terrace. Or let your taste buds be stimulated at UIT INDIA, where Indian top chefs prepare the tastiest meals for you.
